What kind of paint works best to paint the styrofoam part in poster boards?

I'm doing a project using the kind of poster boards that have styrofoam between them. I need to paint that part so what kind of paint would work best? What kind of paint works best to paint the styrofoam part in poster boards?
I don't know if the ';foam'; in foam-core board is actually Styrofoam (foamed polystyrene), but if so you definitely won't want to use a paint or sealer that has a petroleum-solvent base (those will clean up with paint thinner, mineral spirits, etc.).

You'll want something water-based (like acrylic paint, poster paint), and probably want something permanent (like acrylic paint) unless you want to seal it separately or it won't ever get wet or abraded. Water-based things clean up with water or soap and water while they're still wet.

Any kind works. All you need to do is add multiple layers.
