What is the best paint to paint my entire house if i have a toddler who likes to draw on the walls?

Im kinda looking for something washable.

I guess i should really ask what is the best brand for ';washable paint '; What is the best paint to paint my entire house if i have a toddler who likes to draw on the walls?
Oil based, for sure. It's the most washable. Bear in mind that cleanup when you're painting requires mineral spirits, not water, and it smells a bit stronger than latex (but no VOCs). Make sure you have ventilation when painting.

I'd go with a semi-gloss finish, you want it to be smooth. Latex will 'chalk' if you wash it with soap and water. Don't use latex. At all. And spend the money to get decent paint, not the bargain basement Wal-mart special (you end up needing more coats, and it costs you more in the end!)

Clean the heck out of the walls before painting. Ammonia+hot water. If you need to primer them, use oil-based, not latex. And Lowes' 'Zap' primer is just as good as 'Kilz', and costs half as much.

If she gets her hands on a sharpie or other 'permanent' marker, or ink pen, rubbing alcohol will take it right off. For crayons and pencils, 'Magic Eraser' (melamine foam) will scrub them right off.

A quick tap on the butt when you catch her in the act helps, too! What is the best paint to paint my entire house if i have a toddler who likes to draw on the walls?
Thanks to all of the HELPFUL answers. My best answer was between Greg and Helen H. Thanks so much!

WOW, so much fun going on here

I used Sherwin Williams, semigloss. It makes the walls shiny but most things the kids did to it seemed to come off.

Oil based is great and you will get longer use out of it, but you will have a smelly house while painting, it is hard to clean up and next time you paint, you must primer first. If you go from oil based back to latex, the latex will not adhere to the wall. And oil is more expensive.

When you do decide to paint, be sure to buy 1 or two extra quarts mixed at the same time. This will give you small amounts to repaint small areas that get a bit to much decorating help from children Having them mix it at the same time give you a better chance of the new matching the old so you only have to repaint small areas.

I also had a friend that filled some old nail polish bottles with paint. This gave her a tiny brush and a tiny amount of paint, she just covered the doodles with it. That was a lot of work for me but it worked for her.

Hey, good luck. and have fun here at 'we have all the answers'.
AVOID flat paint because it will scrub off.

A semi-gloss will hold up well, but today's better formulated eggshell paints will hold up almost as well with a more forgiving application. (The glossier the paint, the better a painter you have to be!)

Start with a CLEAN wall. If there is any residue of household cleaners the paint will not adhere as well, and will be more likely to be scrubbed off.

The BEHR brand from Lowes is great and I have used it extensively. Another responder bought it at Home Depot, so you could try there, too.

DO NOT USE OIL BASED PAINT INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!

It will take forever to dry and smell to high holy heaven!!

Use latex (water-based) paint. It works just great.

You do NOT need to prime unless you are painting over a color that is darker than the new one. Primer is cheaper than paint so if you would have had to do two coats to cover a darker color, you will save money on your first coat. You can have the store tint the primer, too, if you like, but use a slightly lighter shade of your color, so that when you paint you can make sure you don't miss any spots.

If the existing paint is glossy, you should either prime first or else sand the wall - priming is easier.
Home Depot has a paint out that is made for this, it is made by Glidden and it is, I believe, called washable. Ask the clerk. Otherwise an eggshell or satin paint (has a sheen and is an enamel you can wash). If you give your child a chalkboard in one place and tell them only to draw on that they usually do well because of the different color, they differentiate from regular walls.
wanted to make a joke and say chalkboard paint but you have a real situation Benjamin Moore in the eggshell finish or be hr paint by home depot in the flat enamel finish will be your best bets the time and time again rank tops in consumer report magazine for durability; good luck to you with your little artist!(and don't use gloss or even semigloss on walls it looks hideous)
Use paint that's cleanable. Flat paint is not too good for this. See about semi gloss in a fairly tough brand.

Also, I agree, the kid needs to learn that this is NOT OK. I'm sure you are already working on that, though.
YOU NEED to teach your child NOT to draw on the walls.

or give it something legal to draw on... like chalk board paint.

I do not believe in changing the house to accomodat a child... they need to learn not everything is ok to do!!!!
crayola makes washable markers, paints and of course crayons, my daughter just started drawing, but on paper. your local toys r us has a whole section dedicated to these products.
I like and use Behr brand from Home Depot.
Please don't come to visit me!
