What paint can kids use to paint a rain barrel?

Hubby likes to garden, but in FL you need tons of water. So I thought a rain barrel would make a great Father's Day gift. I have seen rain barrels hand painted. But in my internet research the only paint suggestions I can find is the Krylon spray paint for plastic. I really don't want the kids using spray paint. What kind of paint would you suggest for a plastic rain barrel? What paint can kids use to paint a rain barrel?
You can use the Krylon to spray a base coat on the rain barrel, and then let the kids use what ever paint they want to decorate it. Once they are done and their creation has dried, use a clear, outdoor varnish to protect it.What paint can kids use to paint a rain barrel?
All of the paints for plastic I am aware of are in spray cans or have pretty powerful vapors so aren't good for kids. There are some plastic primers available that you could apply yourself and then let the kids cover it with regular enamel or latex. The folks in a home supply or paint store will be able to help you chose what you need.
Laytex will only last a couple of years then peel...the only other thing there is that might stick to plastic is enamel..and you don't want kids using enamel..unless they wear gloves. It uses paint thinner to clean up with.
