I want to paint my desk and bed frame white. My desk is already mahogany with gloss and everything but I want to make it white. And my bed frame is black (the plastic outer layer for protection). But I want to make that white too. What kind of paint do I need? I don't want the paint to chip or fade. How do I do this? What kind of paint would be best to paint my wooden furniture?
hi tyler
first of all remove any drawers and doors and take off the hardware, then give everything a light sand just to scuff it up you don't want it super smooth. clean with a solution of TSP and water. rinse with fresh water and allow to dry 24 hours. then apply 1 - 2 coats of an alkyd primer. please don't use any of those bonding primers or any other water based primer they will not adhere properly. then apply 1 - 2 coats of an alkyd paint it depends on what type of gloss you want. if you have the equipment to spray this that is great but if you don't then get a couple of 4 inch fabric rollers. give them a good wash to remove any loose hairs and allow to dry. if you use a top quality paint there is no reason at all too top coat with any clear coat. if you want to toughen the finish even more and have a faster drying time then mix in some japan dries. they are present in th paint already. allow atleast 6 hour to dry before recoating with the japan dries and over night if you don't use them. you should always give a light sand between coats. i like to use a sanding sponge. if you follow these instructions you will have a finish that will last for many years. What kind of paint would be best to paint my wooden furniture?
You might want to try a deglosser (available in the paint dept) on both the desk and the plastic coating on the bed frame. Then prime both pieces with a good primer to ensure the paint adheres to the smooth surfaces. A coat of polyurethane ( satin finish for furniture) will help prevent chipping or peeling.
Spray paint is okay but it takes practice and patience to do a good job with out the drip or runs.
Krylon Fusion adheres to plastic but I have not seen white paint in that particular paint.
Sherwin williams sells a great bonding primer that will even stick to ceramic tiles. Sand the work lightly and apply a coat of the primer. After it dries as per directions on the can put a top coat of a good acrylic paint .
spray paint is the only way to go. scuff everything, spray prime then spray finish color. now clear cote. use plastic designed paints for plastic. it is easy to get excellent results.
