How can i paint a wooden step stool so the paint doesn't come off?

i want to paint a child's step stool. what type of paint should i use? do i need to put some kind of topcoat on?How can i paint a wooden step stool so the paint doesn't come off?
Strip off old paint, sand lightly, prime w/kilz, paint, then put a coat of clear sealer, made for paint, on it.

That should do it.How can i paint a wooden step stool so the paint doesn't come off?
I have found with wood you get a much better look if you stain it then varnish it

to paint it and get it to stick you would need to sand it very well and use a ';tack cloth'; to remove all the dust then prime it and paint it

(note you can still clear varnish over paint and it may stay better )
I would use the kind that you would paint a bathroom with - it is resistant to steam and water. If it holds up to those, I think it can hold up to being stepped on.
The key is in the primer. You have to give th paint something to stick to. After that use a good paint.
Get a good quality oil-based enamel or ';floor and porch'; paint. Preparation is the other half of the key -- clean and with a little ';tooth';
