Can you paint over dark walls with light paint straight on?

I have moved into a house and the bathrooms are a dark blue, i would like to paint over them in a light blue. i sound really dumb - but do i just paint straight over them? Can you paint over dark walls with light paint straight on?
it could be done, but will take probably two coats. you would get better results if you use a primer. i would use an enamel in the bathroom because of the moisture, enamels are more durableCan you paint over dark walls with light paint straight on?
You will have better luck if you prime the wall first. If you apply the lighter color the darker color will bleed through. You will have to apply more than one coat in order for it to produce the color you want. It's best to apply a good primer and then you may only have to apply one coat of your desired color.
I suspect the direct answer is ';certainly'; I paint every day of my life and I answer a lot of ';Can I?'; questions, and my addition to the answer is usually, ';But you may not be satisfied.';

Prime the walls first. KILZ and Zinser are two manufacturers that make an adequate product, at a reasonable price.

Steven Wolf
gotta killz it first then paint layers over it!!
You don't sound dumb.

The dark color will bleed on through the new lighter paint, unless you use a primer.

Now, it is possible to make that light blue paint into a kind of wash to create a marble effect with the two blues. But keep in mind that I don't know what else you want to do.

Good luck!
yes you can. you need several layers thou
ok heres how it goes, first you sand down the walls this will knock off imperfections and key the surface, then the filling and sand down again, then a misscoat, just put on any light coloured paint you might have in your shed, and after that 2 coats of your wall colour and your done.

please make sure you use a kitchen and bathroom paint, if you dont it will look ok for a while but you will get rotting on your walls and celing in no time.

have a good look for any mold you might have now, as if you want to get rid of it nows the time! this will bleed through if you dont treat it, you can use a sealant or if you dont want to be spending all your money on a poxy bathroom, then put some oil based undercoat on the stain and let it dry over night before you paint.
You will probably need to do two coats.
The best thing to do is use a cheap oil based undercoat and paint that over. Then use the required colour
Prime it first.
Sure, but you'll end up with multiple coats. It'd be cheaper to paint first with a white primer (cheaper than the finish coat) and a good coat of the light blue.
yes, and if you go to this site it will make you happy!
